President Trump has announced that the United States has entered an agreement with Venezuela which secures majority U.S. control of more than 65 billion barrels of proven oil reserves in the country. Donald Trump posted on his Truth Social platform that the deal would lower U.S. petrol prices and boost prosperity in Venezuela, whose president Nicolás Maduro he ousted in January. Ian McWilliam reports. Donald Trump described his new deal with Venezuela as the biggest oil deal in world history. He said it would more than double U.S. oil reserves and substantially lower prices for U.S. consumers. Rising domestic fuel costs have been a primary concern to the president as the November midterms approach and Iran continues to block shipments through the Strait of Hormuz. Media reports say that in return for U.S. ownership stake, private companies, including American firms, would develop Venezuelan oil fields and return more oil revenue to Venezuela. The meeting was called in response to a violent gang attack in the Haitian capital Port-au-Prince when armed assailants killed at least 47 people. Donald Trump has lost his latest attempts to erase his criminal conviction for falsifying business records. Rory Gallimore reports. Donald Trump is the first and only U.S. president to be convicted of a crime. Two years ago, a New York court found he concealed hush money payments to the porn actress Stormy Daniels in the run up to the 2016 election. He insists he did nothing wrong and has repeatedly attempted to have the ruling thrown out. Mr. Trump has now tried three times to move the case to a federal rather than a state court where he wants it dismissed on the grounds of presidential immunity. But the judge found his lawyer's latest arguments were "neither new nor legally sufficient." The British right-wing commentator Milo Yiannopoulos has been detained by United States immigration authorities for allegedly overstaying his visa. U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement said he was arrested at New Orleans airport and that he would be deported. Mr. Yiannopoulos rose to prominence as an editor of the right-wing website Breitbart and attracted condemnation for inflammatory comments about Muslims, transgender people, feminists and the Black Lives Matter movement. He was a supporter of Donald Trump and backed his tougher immigration policies, although he recently said the president had lost his way.
