U.S. Vice President Kamala Harris on Sunday called for an immediate cease-fire in Gaza and forcefully pressed Israel to increase the flow of aid to ease what she called "inhumane" conditions and a "humanitarian catastrophe" among the Palestinian people.

"Given the immense scale of suffering in Gaza, there must be an immediate cease-fire for at least the next six weeks, which is what is currently on the table."

Harris's comments were among the sharpest yet by a senior leader of the U.S. government calling for Israel to alleviate the conditions in Gaza.

A top Israeli official's visit to the United States has angered Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. AP Correspondent Rica Ann Garcia reports.

Benny Gantz is a political rival who joined Netanyahu's government in the early days of the war. His trip comes as Israel is in deep disagreement with President Biden over Gaza's reconstruction and future plans.

Netanyahu's representative said that the trip was without authorization and that Netanyahu reminded Gantz that the country has just "one prime minister."

An Israeli official said that Gantz's visit aims to boost relations with Washington, support Israel's ground campaign and seek the release of Israeli hostages in Gaza.

Hundreds of inmates have fled Haiti's main prison after armed gangs stormed the facility overnight on Saturday in an explosion of violence that engulfed much of the capital. At least five people were dead.

The jailbreak marks a new low in Haiti's downward spiral of violence. It comes as gangs assert greater control in the capital, Port-au-Prince, while Prime Minister Ariel Henry is abroad trying to salvage support for a United Nations-backed security force.

The leader of a nonprofit that works in the prison says fewer than 100 of the nearly 4,000 inmates remain behind bars.

A chunk of U.S. Republican Party voters in early primary states say they will not cast their ballots for Donald Trump in November's general election. AP correspondent Jackie Quinn reports.

Former President Trump celebrating three easy contest wins this past weekend.

"We've been on our rocket to the Republican nomination."

But AP vote cast surveys find there is weakness among Republican voters who say they won't vote for the former president if he's the nominee in November.

Surveys of voters in New Hampshire find about a third won't support Trump. In Iowa, about 20 percent say they won't support Trump if he's the party nominee.

Among those who voted for Donald Trump in 2020, about 10 percent say they won't do so again. One 74-year-old woman tells us she's not sure she could vote for Joe Biden, but she will not be voting for Donald Trump.

Thousands of senior doctors have rallied in the South Korean capital to express their support for junior doctors who have been on strike for nearly two weeks over a government plan to sharply increase the number of medical school admissions. Details from VOA's Tommie McNeil.

Sunday's rally comes a day before the government said it would begin to take steps to suspend the medical licenses of nearly 9,000 medical interns and residents for defying government orders to end their walkouts, which have disrupted hospital operations.

Protesters chanted slogans, sang and held placards criticizing the government's plan. There were no reports of any violence at the rally.

Malaysia's government says it may renew the hunt for missing Malaysia Airlines flight MH370 after a U.S. technology firm proposed a fresh search in the southern Indian Ocean where the plane is believed to have crashed.

The plane with 239 people aboard vanished a decade ago while in route from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing.

Transport Minister Anthony Loke said Sunday Texas-based Ocean Infinity proposed another "no find, no fee" search.
